Thank you for visiting Guide Dogs of the Desert
(GDD)
Here you will find information about our organization
such as history, services provided, and the many ways
you can help us improve the lives of the visually
impaired. For 35 years, Guide Dogs of the Desert has provided
customized guide dog training. |
Our Mission -
GDD improves the lives of the blind by creating
opportunities for life-changing independence, and by
conducting community outreach and education
programs.
|
Guide Dogs of the Desert was founded in 1972 by Mr. Lafayette "Bud" Maynard with the goal to provide quality guide dogs to the blind and the
blind with special needs. He began by training students one at a time from his home. With the help of the Cathedral City Lions Club, Guide Dogs of the Desert was incorporated and licensed under California State Law and the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Guide Dogs of the Desert provides
safe mobility,
loving companionship and the "miracle of independence" to the
blind through the use of a guide dog.
|
The Board, Staff,
Graduates, Volunteers and Dogs of GDD would like to thank everyone for their support! |
"Going from a cane to a Guide Dog
is
like going from a skateboard to a Ferrari"
-Actual Comment from one of our students, Alan
Approximately 100 volunteers
are puppy raisers for Guide Dogs of the Desert. A number
of other volunteers provide a wide range of support services for Guide Dogs of the Desert.
