Since 1972, Guide Dogs of the Desert (GDD) has made a difference in the lives of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Over the past 45 years, more than 1400 client/dog teams from around the country have graduated from Guide Dogs of the Desert, enjoying richer, fuller and more productive lives. Attending a 28-day in-residence training program on campus, the blind individual is matched with the highest quality dog that is custom-trained to the individual’s personal needs and home environment – at no cost to the client.

Guide Dogs of the Desert is a service provider to the visually impaired supported by over 200 volunteers who raise puppies for training to be service animals for those in need. All dogs are AKC-registered pedigreed animals who are taught obedience and socialization before their intense specialty training as service animals begins.

Guide Dogs is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, totally reliant upon private sector funding

Job Title: Veterinary Assistant

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime), Full-time

Supervises: No


Under the supervision of the Director of Canine Development and Medical the Veterinary Assistant is responsible for the all things related to the medical department, including feeding, cleaning, transportation, scheduling appointments, and breeding. This position will require flexible hours, including overnight shifts.

Medical Responsibilities include:

  • Assists with the preparation of the schedule for the Wellness Center for visits by DVM’s.
  • Keeps track of heat cycles.
  • Assists is whelping litters.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Canine Development and Medical – supports DVM’s, administers medications and vaccines, trims nails, draws blood, cleans wound, cleans ears and updates dogs’ files accordingly.
  • Prepares and sterilizes all utensils for doctors on campus who are performing surgery.
  • Maintains adequate supplies of medications and other necessary items to ensure the health of the dogs in the kennel.
  • Tracks one-year medical evaluations and schedules medical appointments for said evaluations.
  • Ensures medical files are complete and accurate.
  • Cleans and maintains a healthy environment for dogs residing in the puppy den/nursery.
  • Tracks and administers monthly preventative to IFT dogs on campus.
  • Maintains good relationships with Veterinarians who provide us services.
  • Makes sure files are created with all necessary vaccine cards and treatment forms once puppies are born.
  • Assists Kennel Supervisor or Kennel Technicians with animal husbandry in the kennel when there are no veterinary tasks to be performed.
  • Assists with neonates and all things breeding, including, but not limited to: assisting with medical testing, and transportation.
  • Assists in surgery
  • Inputs information on a computer.
  • Assists with Dog placements into homes.

Education and/or experience

High School Graduate or G.E.D.
One year of related experience preferred

Required Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

Must have basic knowledge of animal care
Must have basic computer data entry skills
Must be able to lift 50 pounds
Able to work collaboratively with team members
Must be flexible and able to work holidays, weekends, evenings
Must be able to pass background check and pre-employment drug test

Required Technical / Certification / Licenses

Valid California Driver’s License and Safe Driving Record

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $16.00 per hour
