What Puppy Raising Means to Guide Dog Handlers
“Forward”
It might not sound like much, but this one word signifies a level of freedom that for some, can only be felt through a harness handle. For guide dog users, the ability to embrace independent mobility through partnership is indescribable. It is the freedom to navigate spaces with confidence and assurance. It is being able to travel without apprehensions, in a seamless way.
But, achieving this kind of confidence in mobility is not without a lot of work. It takes an entire team working together to make it possible. From staff and volunteers, to puppy raisers, the experience of working a dog is possible because of the hearts and passions of countless people. As a guide dog handler, it is constantly humbling to recognize how many people were willing to pour their time and heart into Kenny- the dog that makes my confident travel possible. Puppy raisers have a pretty special place in my heart.

They loved Kenny as much as I do, and watched him grow up, helping him to be the best version of himself that he could be. And then letting them go off, to make a difference in my world. It never ceases to amaze me that people out there take that on, to make my travel and mobility better. Puppy raisers are selfless volunteers who provide all of the nurturing a guide dog puppy in training needs to be able to grow up and thrive in their future career. Without their willingness to love, teach and socialize a puppy, my independence would not be what it is. Without them, the freedom in the word “Forward” would not exist.
Having a guide dog is traveling with a best friend, a trusted partner and an effective guide. And all of that starts with the kindness, willingness and selflessness of our puppy raising families. To all of the puppy raisers out there, thank you! Thank you for making a difference. For creating opportunities. And for enhancing freedom… all through loving and raising a puppy who will grow up to change lives.
With so much gratitude,
Danielle & Kenny
